On a tour of Joe Canal's Discount Liquor Outlet, with Michael Brenner, their General Manager of Operations & Marketing, I explored the 25,000 square feet of regional wines from France, Chile, Italy, Germany, Austria, and all over the globe. They also have aisles of refrigerated wines to bring right to a party or event. You can even plan your evenings around the Joe Canal’s Wine and Beer Tasting Events and meet fellow wine enthusiasts!
Below are labels from the fantastic case of wines I took home. The Santa Martina Rosso Toscana was from Tuscany, Italy a famous wine region, and it was perfect with a rare tuna salad and crusty bread. The 337 Lodi Cabernet, from California, was richly textured and enjoyed with sliced apples, pears, and cheeses. The A. Mano Primitivo from Puglia, Italy, had an inherent fruity taste, perfect with grilled chicken and greens. The Clos du Bois Chardonnay was quite familiar, as I had been to this winery in the Sonoma region of California some years ago. It's a longtime favorite, crisp and tangy. I discovered the value of Chilean wines on this excursion to Joe Canal's, and the Cousino-Macul, Antiguas Reservas Cabernet from Maipo Valley was a pleasant surprise, delightful with poached salmon. Luckily I bought a contrasting wine, a Chardonnay, also from Cousino-Macul, Antiguas Reservas, and these were both great finds.
The Di Majo Norante Sangiovese red, from Southern Italy, really spiced up a dinner of grilled vegetables and shrimp. As I discovered, red wines are as impressive with seafood as are the whites. The La Bastarda Pinot Grigio, from Sicily, was a gift for a friend, who loves Pinot. It was hilarious to see the cartoonish character in pink tutu and pointe shoes. She loved the wine, too. The Pratesi Locorosso Toscano was a typical Italian red, and I had Capellini Puttanesca both nights with this wine. A bottle of wine can last two to three nights, so the dishes may be reheated or substituted on the following wine tastings. The Chateau-Thebaud white Muscadet from France accompanied smoked salmon and mustard dishes, all casual and cool. Traveling south to Argentina, in my mind, the Pascual Toso Cabernet from the Mendoza region was poured next to hearts of palm, sliced papayas, and mangoes, a south of the border special.
Michael Brenner sent me the Pol Roger champagne as a gift, and it really highlighted a festive occasion. The Root:1 Cabernet from Colchagua Valley, Chile, brought out the best in a Fettucini and clam dish.
