My brother, Steve, was in town today to share his recent birthday with me at a fine Thai restaurant. Some years ago, Steve had visited Thailand and has always loved Thai cuisine. Bangkok House owner and manager, Nira, joined us for dinner, and she and restaurant manager, Aon, chose a variety of appetizers, such as fried shrimp with plum sauce, steamed shrimp and chicken dumplings, and an exotic salad adorned with sliced duck.

For entrees, Steve ordered Pad Thai with tofu and turnips, and I ordered a seafood combination with mussels, squid, scallops, and chili. However, we ended up sharing the dinner, and Nira added a Thai broccoli dish, as well. As it had been Steve's birthday, I had asked Aon to bring out a dessert with a candle, but, to our surprise, the lights went out and a recorded birthday song ensued, entertaining the restaurant guests with fun and warmth.

Make a reservation at Bangkok House on NYC's Restaurant Row (West 46th Street) in the heart of Broadway. Ask for Aon, and tell her you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
