Before catching Frank Langella in the new Broadway show, Man and Boy, I was joined by Alonso Salguero, Founder and Owner, Salon Ziba on West 57th Street, at Nuela, one of the most gorgeous restaurant spaces I've seen in New York. The owners and management of Nuela are from Colombia, as is Alonso, and Sigi Pazos, Manager, chatted with Alonso before our pre-theatre dinner. Nuela is well located on West 24th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues, and its vibrant red-orange-dark wood interior was designed by fashion designer, Angel Sanchez. Nuela is expansive, at 3,000 square feet, with separate dining areas, including a 50-seat cevicheria (where guests dine on ceviche), a bar, a dining room with bustling street views, and a captivating private room with colorful bottles on shelves.

We began the evening with cornbread from the kitchen, hot and served with warm butter. Alonso chose the Nueva Latina Cocktail, with Ketel One Vodka, Pisco 100, Mango, Guava, Lime & Peruvian Pepper, while I conservatively ordered a glass of South American Chardonnay, considering I'd soon be reviewing a play. Nuela has a wine menu from around the globe, with numerous selections from Argentina, Spain, Chile, and Portugal. The cocktail menu includes such choices as "Andean Beauty" and "Tomillo Limonada". Port wines, Cognacs, Champagnes, and Wines by the glass can be explored as well.

For the Appetizers, Alonso's Market Ceviche featured fresh Sea Bass, with Lime and Red Onion, and my Tuna Ceviche was adorned with Charred Pineapple, Miso, and Summer Radishes. Sigi Pazos brought Alonso a special surprise of Colombian Ajiaco Soup, with corn and potato, which he really loved. Alonso's "Lomo Saltado" featured Ribeye, Tomato, Red Onion, and French Fries, while my Salmon "Panela" featured Creamy Quinoa, Charred Scallion, and Lemongrass Emulsion.

At this point, we were running late for the theatre, so we had to wait until another visit to Nuela for Colombian coffee and a sumptuous selection of desserts, like Chocolate Terrine or a trio of exotic sorbets. You can call Nuela at 212.929.1200 and reserve your solo, duo, or party dining. While you're there, ask for a tour of the party spaces, and book early for the Holidays! Tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com!
