On a yet warm October weekend, I enjoyed the sophisticated décor and Northern Indian menu at Basera Indian Bistro on Ninth Avenue, between 50th and 51st Streets, near all Broadway shows, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, City Center, Fordham University, the Ailey Center, and Riverside Park South. Basera is also in the heart of the Ninth Avenue Hell's Kitchen restaurants with their diverse ethnic cuisine. At Basera, Raj will greet you warmly, as will his enthusiastic wait staff, and they'll help you find the perfect dish or assortment of complimentary dishes that match your mood and taste, while you listen to and, if you wish, watch new Bollywood movies, on a wide-screen television. At the friendly bar, you'll also find a live sports screen.

Basera has dozens of delectable dishes, with appetizers like Calamari Bhajia, Vegetable Samosa, Bhel Puri (rice puffs with chickpea noodles in tamarind & cilantro sauce), and Tandoori Specialties. Breads include Naan (plain or stuffed with cheese, onion), Paratha (with spinach, mint, chili), and Roti (whole wheat). Biryani options with rice include Shrimp, Saffron Chicken, and Vegetable. Seafood Specialties include Malabar Fish Curry (with salmon cooked in pepper, tomato, and curry leaf sauce), Shrimp Vindaloo (cooked with potatoes in vinegar), and Lobster Malai (lobster tails in almond-coconut sauce). For vegetarians and vegetable lovers, Basera features an expansive array of dishes, such as Malai Kofta (Indian cheese dumplings), Paneer Makhani (cubes of Indian cheese in tomato sauce), and Yellow Daal (lentils). Chicken Specialties include Chicken Tikka Saag (with fresh spinach) and Chicken Mango. Lamb and Beef Specialties have options like Lamb or Goat Curry. Basera prides itself on its Tandoori Specialties, like Murg Malai Kebab (grilled creamy chicken breast), Grilled Halibut (with fresh cilantro & Indian spices), and Seafood Mixed Grill.

For dessert you might like a Gulab Jamun (Indian cheese balls in honey) or Kulfi (homemade pistachio almond ice cream). Basera has a full bar, and, when dining alone or with a friend, you might choose to eat right at the bar, where you can people watch through the windows or chat with guests. And, at dinner time, if you mention you saw them on, you will be treated to a complimentary glass of wine or a beer! Monday through Friday, Basera has two Happy Hours, 12PM - 3PM, and 5PM - 8PM! Saturday and Sunday, Basera features a Happy Hour from 2PM through 7PM! Happy Hour drinks include a glass of house wine or a beer for $4, and special cocktails for only $5! Basera also features a Lunch Special for $9.95, with choice of Entrée, Rice, and Naan, as well as a Prix Fixe Dinner for $19.95, with Appetizer, Entrée, and Naan.
