Last week, I caught up with David LaMarche, Conductor, American Ballet Theatre (ABT), at Basera Indian Bistro for an exploration of excellent, made to order, Northern India cuisine. During our before dinner drinks, Chardonnay for me and Stella Artois beer for David, we enjoyed a conversation about the highlights of ABT's current fall season at Lincoln Center. The night we met at Basera, David had a night off from conducting, and I had a night off from viewing and reviewing, although, for me, there's no such thing as too many nights at the ballet!

For starters, we ordered one of my favorite dishes at Basera, Prawn Balchao (shrimps in coconut and mustard seed sauce), plus two kinds of Indian bread, Paratha with Spinach and Stuffed Naan with Cheese. Our main dishes were David's Chicken Korma (chicken cooked in saffron almond sauce) and my Malabar Fish Curry (salmon cooked in pepper, tomato, and curry leaf sauce), both served with Basmati Rice. Raj, the very attentive host of Basera, stopped for a photo with the Maestro, in Basera's dim candlelight. At dinner time, if you mention you saw Basera on RobertaOnTheArts.com, you will be treated to a complimentary glass of wine! Also, Monday through Friday, Basera has two Happy Hours, 12PM - 3PM, and 5PM - 8PM! Saturday and Sunday, Basera features a Happy Hour from 2PM through 7PM! Basera is located just steps from the theater district and in the heart of Hell's Kitchen. Don't forget to ask for Raj, and tell him you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com!
