Meske on West 47th Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues in Hell's Kitchen, near Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, and its sister restaurant, Meskerem, at 124 MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village, near downtown theaters and jazz clubs, are both owned by Michael Ayalew, a restaurateur who oversees decor and authentic Ethiopian menus. I recently caught up with Michael at Meske and took a photo of the Meskerem Combo, Michael's lunch, featuring beef cooked for the occasion. My own Vegetarian Combo, added to Doro Wat Chicken Leg with Onions in Berbere Sauce, was an entirely new and thrilling tasting experience. Although the custom in Ethiopian restaurants is to eat with no utensils, using the brown Ethiopian, spongy bread and one's hands, casual style, I broke custom this one time and used silverware. Next time, with a guest, I'll be more adventurous.

However, the dining experience was outstanding, and the Split Lentils, Split Peas, Collard Greens, Ground Chick Peas, String Beans, Carrots, Hard-Boiled Egg, and Chicken Leg Portions were spiced just perfectly for an exquisite introduction to Ethiopian cuisine. Tsion and her twin sister, who is now visiting in Ethiopia, are both warm and generous in their attentiveness and time to maximize your culinary adventure. Michael is often available, as well, to help you create the perfect combination of menu selections for you and your friends or family. Lunch Specials, from 12 PM to 3:30 PM, are extremely reasonable, a great way to explore Meske and Meskerem's cuisine, with featured dishes like Yebeg Alecha (Lamb cubes marinated with butter, cooked with ginger, garlic, and curry) and Miser Alech (Split lentils dipped with ginger, garlic, onions, olive oil, and curry, then cooked). All dishes can be ordered for mild to hot and spicy preferences.

Michael has decorated both restaurants with charming style. Meske has antique furniture accessories and authentic Ethiopian art and potted plants, adorning walls and intimate spaces. In fact, Meske has a side dining room, perfect for intimate parties or conversational dining. Stop by Meske and ask for Tsion or Michael. Tell them you saw them on! Or, stop by Meskerem and ask for the Manager or wait staff. They will eagerly assist you in making your Ethiopian dining experience a memorable occasion.
