In 1926, Frankie & Johnnie’s was a speakeasy with a secret entrance and knock. The Broadway dining clientele, however, has known and loved Frankie & Johnnie’s, since prohibition was repealed, as an elegant, hearty steakhouse, for the finest steaks, chops, seafood, and their famous apple strudel. For decades upon decades, stars of stage and screen have visited Frankie & Johnnie’s with signed photos of themselves to adorn the high walls (long before social media was invented), along with hundreds of Broadway theater posters, plus a poster of the 1991, Pacino-Pfeiffer film, “Frankie and Johnny”. Proprietor, Peter Chimos, who also owns and runs the 37th Street and Rye, NY Frankie & Johnnie’s Steakhouses, speaks of numerous theater celebrities who visit and dine before or after their shows. Because the newest 46th Street space is so expansive, Broadway stars, producers, and audiences choose Frankie & Johnnie’s for intimate and large-scale private events. Mezzanine seating, overlooking the main dining room and luxurious, mirrored bar, is a popular choice for convivial parties, as guests can mingle throughout the lovely, upstairs spaces. There’s even a Juliet balcony for speeches or song. A smaller, intimate room, with inlaid wood and antique-styled décor, is perfect for birthdays and anniversaries, as well as office events.

Close to the front entrance, visitors arriving at the West 46th Street Frankie & Johnnie’s can take a seat at the bar, where bartender, Maria, will create an exceptional cocktail to order, like my Cosmopolitan with lime. Signature cocktails at the bar are limitless, look at the cocktail menu and adjust to your whim. Fine wines, red or white, include (by the glass) Sparkling: Mumms Cuvee Napa and Perrier Jouet, "Brut" Cuvee, White: Sauvignon Blanc, Callaway and Pinot Grigio, Barbella, Red: Merlot, Villa Mt Eden and Cabernet Sauvignon, Fortant de France, and Blush: White Zinfandel, Woodbridge. The Frankie & Johnnie’s wine menu divides bottled wines into “All that Glitters and Bubbles”, “Cast of…” White or Red Players, as well as “Big Stars”, plus “Old World” and “New World” wines. Wine labels (438 total) include White: Sancerre, Michel Picard, Loire Pinot Grigio, Campanile, Fruili, Italy, and Pinot Grigio, Santa Margherita, Alto Adige, as well as Red: Pauillac, Mouton Rothschild, Bordeaux, St. Estephe, Chateau Montrose, Bordeaux, and Margaux, Pavillon Rouge de Ch. Margaux, Bordeaux.

All three Frankie & Johnnie’s Steakhouses are open for lunch and dinner, with slight variations in time. Click here for details. Menus, as well, are slightly differentiated, and you can explore the location menus here. The 37th Street location includes Pub and Whiskey Menus, and the Rye location has a Bar Menu, too. At the 46th Street location you can order any appetizer or entrée at the bar and watch sports or news on the wide television screens or chat with other pre-theater or post-theater guests. In the kitchen (see photos below), I was thrilled to see the masterful staff at work grilling Steaks, Chops, and Salmon and frying fresh Calamari for the guests. Sunday to Friday, there is a Pre- or Post-Theatre, 3-Course Menu, with Petite Filet Mignon, 8oz brandy peppercorn, vegetables, and potato available as an entrée, among a variety of choices. À la carte dinner Starters include premium seafood, like Shrimp Scampi, Littleneck Clams, and Blue Point Oysters, plus soups and salads, like Burrata and Tomatoes and Golden Corn Bisque. Steaks, like Sirloin and Porterhouse, are ordered by temperature, from rare to well done, and Double Loin Lamb Chops and Pork Chops are included in the selections from the grill. Lobster Ravioli and Chilean Sea Bass are also featured on the impressive daily menu. And, where else could you choose from eight different potato sides.

Frankie & Johnnie’s Steakhouse would be thrilled to cater your special event, and, at the Restaurant Row location, ask for Adrian, Manager, for planning assistance. Each location has specialists to make your party a smash success. Stop by Frankie & Johnnie’s Steakhouse on West 46th Street for a drink at the bar and the best Calamari in town. Then, peruse the menu and treat yourself to the finest dinner in the theater district! Ask for Peter or Adrian, and tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com!
