Beth Sheinis and Josh Toth, Co-Proprietors of the lovely, historic Hourglass Tavern on Restaurant Row, near all Broadway and Off-Broadway shows and within walking distance to New York City Center and Carnegie Hall, greeted me on several occasions, recently, for tours and brunch. One has the distinct feeling, on entering this three-story former speakeasy, adorned in stone, brick, original artwork, musical instruments, two bars, a covered antique bathtub, floral displays, and many, many actual hourglasses, that you might be staying overnight, after dinner, in a bed and breakfast abode, rather than leaving after dinner and drinks. The ambiance is so warm and welcoming, that you don’t want to leave. For the Hell’s Kitchen-Broadway community, as well as New York visitors, Hourglass Tavern is truly like a second home. In fact, the second floor Bettibar, open daily to 4 AM, brings you right into the first rays of sunrise.

You have many choices for dining at Hourglass Tavern, including the sidewalk café, the street-level tables near the open kitchen, the second-level, intimate Bettibar dining, at tables and at the bar, and the third-level, private party room, where musical instruments create a fanciful décor, above additional, intimate table seating. When you leave Hourglass Tavern you are bound to have a few new friends, as the atmosphere is so inclusive and social. Beth and Josh personally greet guests as old and new friends, right on arrival. The utmost personal attention is given to guests’ culinary requests. And, the cocktails! You might try Bettibar's Bourbon Sour, “with Elijah Craig Bourbon and house crafted sour mix. This complex whiskey demands that any accompaniment be a formidable match to its unique blend.” Or you may prefer the “Champagne Cocktails’ French 77 Queen of the champagne cocktail. This is the drink of choice of the “oh so” sophisticated Theatre-goer. This simple blend of lemon syrup, champagne, and St-Germain elderflower liqueur is Heaven in a champagne flute!” (Courtesy of Hourglass Cocktail Menu).

The brownstone building that houses Hourglass Tavern was built in 1894, and the original restaurant was just seven tables on the street level, where the kitchen is located. To move patrons to the theater and other local events on time, the original Proprietors turned an hourglass to time the usage of tables. On the other two floors, tenants were housed in small apartments. Now, with the sidewalk café and three dining spaces, guests can enjoy a leisurely weekend brunch that’s served right until early dinner time. A variety of “Prix-Fixe” dinners, including pre-theatre specials, is available, as well as “Hearty Snacks” (like Grilled Chicken Club) and “Snacklettes” (like Masala & Artichoke Hummus and Shrimp Positano), a “Kids’ Menu”, “Sliders” (like Chicken & Sundried Tomato Meatballs), and “Stuffed Puffs” (like Ham & Cheese). Dinner Entrées include Pecan Encrusted Tilapia, and Pasta Entrées include Penne Mascarpone. A varied and shifting array of desserts will tempt you, as well. White wines, by the glass or bottle, include Pinot Grigio, Santi, 2014, Delle Venezie, Italy, and red wines, by the glass or bottle, include Cabernet Sauvignon, Tom Gore, 2013, Alexander Valley, CA. Stop by Hourglass Tavern and ask for Beth or Josh or Manager, Onika. Tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com!
