The recently opened Temerario, owned and operated by Jorge Guzman and his group, including Cliff Freid and Chef Mario Hernandez, is a vibrant new Chelsea restaurant for contemporary Mexican street cuisine. Located at the corner of West 20th Street and Eighth Avenue, Temerario is close to the High Line park and walkways, the Chelsea art galleries, ballroom dance studios, the Joyce Theater for modern dance and ballet, Atlantic Theater Company, and the headquarters of American Ballet Theatre and its Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School for ballet. Temerario is in the heart of Chelsea, where actors, musicians, dancers, choreographers, stage technicians, designers, and visual artists make their homes. In fact, the muscular, graffiti-inspired murals, throughout the brick walls of the dining areas, plus neon artwork, give Temerario an energized, urban vibe. The sleek steel chairs and bright barstools, along with solid wood tables, add strength and youthful vigor as well. The Spanish translation of “temerario” is bold or reckless. With a busy bar scene, including Happy Hour 4 PM to 7 PM daily and drinks until 1 AM, plus a busy lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch scene, Temerario is the new Chelsea dining destination, along with its sister restaurant, the Spanish wine and tapas bar, Lamano, located next door.

The Wine, Beer, and Cocktail Menu at Temerario is extraordinary, including Smoky Jalapeño Margarita and Red Sangria on the Happy Hour Menu, as well as Doss XX Lager and Modelo Especial. The cocktail in the photo below, called Mexican Detox, is made with Espolon Blanco Tequila, house made ginger beer, honey, lime juice, and cucumber purée. Temerario’s Happy Hour menu also includes a Queso Fundido (cheese fondue, with chorizo, salsa, and tortillas), as well as Flautas de Papa (crispy potato and cheese taquitos, black beans, salsa verde, and queso fresco [fresh cheese]). The Lunch Menu features the above Happy Hour items, plus Quesadilla (corn tortilla, chihuahua cheese, mushrooms, epazote [Mexican herb], salsa verde), Enchiladas Suizas (braised chicken, salsa verde, chihuahua cheese, black beans), and Tacos de Pescado (mahi mahi Baja style, chipotle aioli, pickled cabbage). The Dinner Menu also includes Pescado a la Talla (grilled Branzino, guajillo adobo [a chile sauce], palmito avocado salad, crispy potatoes, tortillas, salsa roja), Pollo Rostizado (roasted chicken breast, salsa verde, cauliflower, string beans), and Carne Asada (NY strip steak, chile pasilla salsa, fingerling potatoes, cactus salad, tortilla). The Weekend Brunch Menu features Huarache (grilled steak and eggs, corn huarache, queso fresco, market greens), Pan Dulce (brioche manchego toast, bananas, pecans, goat’s milk caramel, banana ice cream), and Chilaquiles (corn tortilla smothered in tomatillo salsa, queso fresco, avocado, sunny-side up eggs). Brunch drinks include Mimosa, Peach Bellini, and Hibiscus Lemonade.

Stop by Temerario for Lunch, Dinner, Weekend Brunch, Happy Hour drinks, Espresso and Postres (desserts), where you can sample the traditional Tres Leches (sponge cake, kumquat jam, mascarpone cream), or a late bar-side cocktail and chat. Be sure to tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
