There’s a high style bar and lounge that just opened with a tropical splash in Hell’s Kitchen, called Bar Gonzo, at 511 Ninth Avenue, between 38th and 39th Streets. Bar, Cocktail, and Dinner hours of operation are 5 PM to 2 AM daily, with Lunch served weekdays, 11:30 AM to 3 PM, as well. And, weekend Brunch will debut this month. At this ebullient, bi-level lounge and bar, you'll be greeted at street level by a vibrantly lit peacock behind the lower floor marble bar, lusciously tall green plants, blue-green-gold, lit wall panels, wood and steel comfortable seating, and zigzag, wood flooring. A stairway leads to the upstairs lounge and party space, past the oyster bar and rattan chair, where you will find a wraparound bar with deep green leather seating, that matches more tall, tropical greenery. Marble tables are mixed with benches and a variety of seating for privacy or communal comfort. Tables can be joined for large or intimate parties, or you and your friends can party at the bar with the vivacious bartenders, who have the best cocktails awaiting your request. The upstairs lighting shifts from hot pink to natural luminosity, and, when the weather turns to balmy spring, the roof will retract for an open-air roof garden effect. Meanwhile, the lovely outdoor terrace, with a street view, can be accessed by large sliding windows. A few nights ago, on New Year’s Eve, Bar Gonzo hosted a fantastic party, with festive décor. The sound system, with DJ’s on hand, was wraparound, like the busy, centered bar.

Bar Gonzo, owned and operated by RL King and Leonardo Marino, with the elegant Alyssa McKean, as General Manager, is aesthetically inspired by writers, Ernest Hemingway, George Plimpton, and Hunter Thompson, along with the decadence and disco era of the 1970’s. I suspect Mardi Gras, Cinco de Mayo, and Bastille Day might be featured upcoming events, along with major Holidays and whimsical or exotic celebratory themes. Speaking of exotic, the Cocktail Menu includes: Peacock in Hand, with Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, Pineapple, Campari, Lime, Agave Nectar, and Tabasco; Gonzo 365 Sangria, with Aylesbury Duck Vodka, Dry Lambrusco, Bengali Tea, and Lemon; Negroni, with Ford’s Gin, Campari, and Cinzano 1757 Sweet Vermouth; and Improved Old Fashioned, with Russell’s Reserve Rye, Elijah Craig Bourbon, Demerara Syrup, Angostura Bitters, and Orange Bitters. An impressive selection of Sparkling, Red, and White Wines are available by the glass or bottle, and Beers and a Full Premium Bar await you, as well. The Happy Hour Menu features Bar Snacks, like Fried Green Bananas, Specialty Cocktails, Select Beers, Select Wines, Pizza of the Day, and Fresh Oysters on the Half Shell.

The expansive Dinner Menu includes options from Snacks Meant to Keep You Drinking, like Bacon Cracker Jacks, and from Friends with Debbie, like Raindrops on Roses, with Long-Stemmed Artichokes, Lemon, Almonds, Ricotta Salata, and Olive Oil, as well as Roasted Baby Carrots, with Buffalo Labne, Fried Nuts, Pilpilchuma, and Mint. Also on the Dinner Menu are Too Raw, Too Rare, like Grilled Half Main Lobster, while Things on Sticks includes Baby Portobello Mushrooms with Saffron Aioli. You can also order from a Daily Selection of Cheeses and a Daily Selection of Cured Meats. Latch Key Kid Pizzas, made with French Bread, include Buy the Ticket, with Buffalo Mozzarella, Sunday Supper’s Tomato Sauce, and Basil. For Dessert you might like a Tiramisu, with Kahlua and Espresso. The lovely Lunch Menu includes Bartenders’ Favorites: Wines by the Glass, Beers, and Cocktails, as well as Soups, Sandwiches, Pizzas, Desserts, and Mid-Day Bites, like Marinated Seafood Salad, with Mussels, Octopus, Shrimp, Grilled Bread, Aioli, and Parsley, and Gonzo Caesar, with Kale, Anchovies, Pecorino, Fried Bread, and Garlic Dressing.
