It was an honor to attend the dedication ceremony and lunch at The New Yorker Hotel today, honoring the hotel's IEEE Milestone Award for its Direct Current (DC) generating plant, installed in 1929. This plant was capable of supplying electric power to 35,000 people, and, at the time, was the largest private generating plant in the USA. It used over 200 DC motors, and it was controlled from a seven foot high, sixty-foot long switchboard.
"The New Yorker Hotel joins an elite group of more than 75 IEEE Milestones around the world including Volta’s Electrical Battery Invention (1799), the Electric Fire Alarm System (1852), the First Wearable Cardiac Pacemaker (1957-58), and the Electronic Quartz Wristwatch (1969). The New Yorker is the ONLY hotel to make this impressive list." (New Yorker PR Notes)
Today's program included Welcoming Remarks from Tom McCaffrey, Director of Marketing & Sales, New Yorker Hotel, followed by an additional Welcome from David M. Weiss, Chair, IEEE New York Section. Melvin I. Olken, the Historian, IEEE New York Section, introduced Alexander B. Magoun, Curator, Sarnoff Corporation, in NJ, who gave the first Keynote Address. The second Keynote was given by Joseph Kinney, Senior Project Engineer, New Yorker Hotel, and Mr. Kinney spoke of his vast collection of New Yorker memorabilia. Kinney also asked, “What is so special about a power plant constructed 80 years ago and decommissioned about 40 years ago that we still remember it today? It’s not because it was the biggest private power plant, though it was, and it’s not because any single component of the system was revolutionary. It’s because of the way they were put together.” (New Yorker PR Notes) John R. Vig, 2009 IEEE President, presented the plaque for the Milestone Award, and Melvin I. Olken returned with Closing Remarks.
An elegant lunch was served, as the New Yorker Hotel has exceptional banquet facilities and catering staff, ready for any and all occasions. My stuffed fillet of sole was delicious and hot. I offered my chocolate mousse dessert to the table, and the engineers, with whom I was seated, shared it quickly. The New Yorker Hotel is an ideal setting for your professional and personal receptions, awards ceremonies, family reunions, and parties.
