After many attempts, Alonso Salguero and I found time to catch up at Seven Bar and Grill, near Penn. Station, Madison Square Garden, and the Theatre and Fur District. Alonso is Founder and Owner of Salon Ziba, a busy hair salon on West 57th Street, Midtown Manhattan. Salon Ziba has a warm, friendly staff, on two floors, with specialists for state of the art color and highlight treatments, hair styling, facials, make-up, bridal hair and make-up, manicure/pedicure, waxing, massage, and more. The staff speaks at least a dozen different languages, and Salon Ziba has a sophisticated, international ambiance.

Alonso was born and raised in Colombia, and he and his family designed elegant gold and fine gemstone jewelry. Alonso was trained in the family craft at an early age and was soon head of the company's quality control. On arrival in New York, Alonso attended Mercy College and Hunter College, majoring in business administration. He also worked in real estate investment and renovated homes for re-sale. Alonso became interested in the Hair Salon industry in the 1980's, on meeting his future partner at Suga Salon on East 57th Street, a stylist named Shunji Matsuo. Alonso and Shunji co-invested in Salon Ziba, partly as a result of the success of the Jean Louis David Salons, which were thriving.

In 1989, Salon Ziba opened its doors, bringing in twelve stylists (including Shunji) and two colorists. In 2008, Alonso is happy to say he has 48 on his staff, and Salon Ziba is busy, busy. Their "No Reservation Required" policy, plus reasonable pricing, especially "in this economy", as Alonso says, contribute to their renowned success. Alonso says, "For $45, you can get a shampoo, with fabulous products, a cut, blow dry styling, and look great!" And, he says this is lower even than the 1980's prices, when he was at Suga Salon. Check out Salon Ziba's Services Menu, and call 212.767.0577 for a reservation, today! There are still openings for Holiday color and styling. By coincidence, our Waitperson, Magda, is a Salon Ziba client, quite a surprise.

For lunch, Alonso and I each ordered a glass of South African Merlot, really smooth and warm, and Alonso had a Fried Calamari appetizer, followed by an entrée of Grilled Chicken Paillard and Arugula. I ordered two Jumbo Shrimps and Cocktail Sauce (the largest shrimps I have ever seen), followed by Skillet Blackened Sea Scallops, Haricots Verts, and Saratoga Mashers. The espresso and cappuccino were steaming hot and strong. Seven has classy atmosphere, with roomy booths, large, comfortable tables at the rear, and a balcony level of tables, all of which can seat a party of up to 200 guests, or an upstairs buffet of 80-90 guests. You can call 212.967.1919 to reserve a booth or a table at Seven Bar and Grill. Ask for Michelle, and tell her you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
