For my friend ele Franklin's birthday, I reserved a table at Terrace in the Sky, for an elegant brunch. ele lives in Oyster Bay, Long Island, and she was in town for a Broadway matinee, Impressionism, with Jeremy Irons, Joan Allen, and Marsha Mason. Terrace in the Sky opens the Brunch service on Sundays at 11:00 AM, so there's plenty of time to relax before a matinee or museum, to gaze at the window views, to stroll the outdoor patio, with a wraparound Manhattan skyline, and to order two or three courses from the versatile and inviting menu, with European and American nouvelle cuisine.
We began the day with a glass of Terrace in the Sky's special Champagne, dry and sparkling, and later ordered white wine by the glass. For appetizers, ele chose Warm Duck Confit with Lardons Frissée, Endives, Poached Pears, and Hazelnut Vinaigrette, and I chose Peekeytoe Crab Cakes with Baby Romaine Salad and Marinated White Anchovies. For our entrées, ele decided on Roasted Berkshire Pork Loin with Apple-Quince Compote, Parsnips, and Braised Sweet Lettuce. I decided on Organic Salmon, Fingerling Potatoes, Fall Vegetables, Blue Chanterelles, and Aromatic Emulsion. We each ordered the same dessert, prepared especially for this Sunday Brunch, Chai Spiced Pear with Flamed Meringue, Toasted Pine Nuts, and Pear Shortcake, with ele's dessert plate decorated for her birthday.
