Pucho, as he’s called, to fit in with his Latin music, is a very chatty and ebullient bandleader, who’s been in the Latin jazz scene for decades. His band is called The Latin Soul Brothers, and they include two Latin percussionists, plus a drummer and Pucho on timbales. Trombone, trumpet and alto sax create a vivacious brassy section, and the trombonist doubles on a jazz-infused violin. Piano and electric bass fill out this nine-piece band, and they certainly lit up Iridium with Latin pulse and danceable mambo rhythms. The first piece, Ellington’s “Caravan”, performed with extra Latin infusion, sounded like the 1990’s Copacabana, with clavé tempos that soared with Mac Gollehon’s vivacious trumpet, merging with Felipe Luciano’s congas and Pucho’s timbales. Marcus Persiani, on piano, took the lead, then Tehrin Cole, on electric bass, and the four percussionists went wild. Santi Rivera stood steadily tapping his cowbell for extra clavé clarity. The brass contingent, with Lewis Kahn on trombone, Chris Hemingway on alto sax, and Mac Gollehon on trumpet, made this sound soar.

Miles Davis’ “Milestones” was next, and it opened with vibrant verve. Chris Hemingway’s alto sax was prominent, before the trumpet, then Marcus Persiani’s piano joined the congas and bass. Repetitive phrases ensued, endlessly, just like on the mambo dance floor, generating momentum and energy. Pucho was clearly in the lead, signaling the men when to slightly shift the echoing refrains. The pulse was incredible and filled Iridium with musical drive. A contrasting, popular bolero followed, called “Invitation”, composed by Bronislau Kaper for two 1950’s films and often arranged for jazz and Latin bands. Marcus Persiani carried the retro piano theme with gorgeous results. Sonny Rollins’ “St. Thomas” was next, with sizzling, sassy brassiness, as the trumpet took the sound to another realm. This time, Pucho’s band heated the club with straight ahead jazziness, upbeat and pulsating in the moment. The four percussionists, including drums and Latin, were now backed by piano and bass, an explosion of rhythm. A loosely presented Afro-Cuban piece ensued, heavy on congas, joined by a sax-trumpet duo. The music was eclectic and exotic. Tyrone Govan’s long drum riff was finally joined by an equally scintillating keyboard riff. The finale was straight be-bop, with Lewis Kahn’s elegant violin riff, a new sound emerging in an encore piece.
