Tonight was another lovely evening in the Algonquin Hotel’s Oak Room. Dinner for me was a scrumptious shrimp cocktail, gorgeous green salad, and crisp Chardonnay. Kendall, the Oak Room Hostess, was helpful and attuned to the best spot to see Stacey Kent and her band. Stacey was outstanding, and, with husband, Jim Tomlinson on saxophone, they are quite a pair, so in tune with each other’s next song or side story.

Let’s Do It was sung in dynamic form, with a rhythm change for Tomlinson’s solo. It Might As Well Be Spring featured David Newton on piano and Tomlinson on sax, as Stacey’s lyrics melted before us. What Are You Doing for the Rest of Your Life? was sung in a whispered duet with Newton’s piano, and Stacey appeared as a golden light in the darkness of The Oak Room. Cockeyed Optimist had varying dynamics, and Lucky to be Me, featuring Pat O’Leary on bass, was sensuous and sultry. O’Leary is a pro, and this was an effective rendition.

Devil May Care, featuring Tom Melito on drums and Tomlinson on sax, brought effusive energy back onstage, while Stardust returned the quartet’s melancholy, mesmerizing mood. Stacey’s “intimate” asides to her audience are warm, loving, and often humorous. And, they change every season, perhaps every night. By Myself, in the memory of Fred Astaire, was sung by Stacey with reverence and richness. Stacey Kent is a regular at The Oak Room; See The Oak Room Schedule for details. This is a must-experience venue, and food and service are divine! Tell them you read about The Oak Room on www.RobertaOnTheArts.com.
