This second set tribute to the late Stan Getz, created by musicians from both North and South Americas, the Brazilians, Trio de Paz, the Chilean Vocalist, Claudia Acuna, and the Americans, Harry Allen on tenor sax and Bill Charlap on piano, just made you wish you could Samba at the Iridium. In fact, the first piece, a Samba, was ever so smooth, ever so sensual. Duduka da Fonseca’s brushes and Nilson Matta’s bass warmed up the Club, just as Harry Allen took the lead on tenor sax, with an eloquent melody passed on to Romero Lubambo on guitar. Their harmonies were seasoned and sensational.
The second piece, with Charlap in the lead, fused Brazilian Samba and Jazz, as Charlap broke into a dynamic, driven solo over the bass and drums. Sultry Samba dissolved into hot jazz, an eclectic approach. Nilson Matta’s bass solo returned Samba to mood and motif, and Duduka da Fonseca added flourishes of brushes to round the edges, just as Harry Allen finished with flourish. Ms. Acuna soon presented a popular and undulating Samba, like cognac and candles warming the soul. When Bill Charlap joined on piano, brush and bass effects were ever so slight. Ms. Acuna has a throaty, seamless style.
The next piece, with vibrant vocal lead, was performed over the entire ensemble, with metal percussive punctuations, generous guitar, and powerful piano, followed by Harry Allen’s languorous lead and Ms. Acuna’s vocal repetitions. Romero Lubambo led the following song, soft, dreamy, and ethereal, joined by percussive effects on cymbals and drums. This was again a danceable piece, especially with the ensuing jazzy fusion, when Harry Allen seized the theme and kicked it up to contemporary jazz.
The finale, I Didn’t Know What Time It Was, with an intense piano, percussion, bass riff, was all jazz, contemporary and contagious. Harry Allen and Ms. Acuna were relaxed and resonant. This five-night tribute to Stan Getz’ collaboration of musicians from North and South America was a great idea and a huge success.
