Opening her new CD release (The Rules of the Road) event with The Best Is yet to Come, Catherine Dupuis and her eight piece orchestra built volume and verve on each soaring syllable. Some songs lowered to a whisper, and Ms. Dupuis extended “you were thinking toooooo…” to a rapturous effect. Rhythms shifted from Bossa Nova to Swing, with sparkling surprises to match Ms. Dupuis’ sparkling, blue gown, such as in a rich rendition of I Have Dreamed, from The King and I.

The title song was reminiscent of signature Sinatra, but, with no obvious imitation, Ms. Dupuis presented her own voice, her own take on these moody lyrics, adding an occasional accent on initial and final consonants, one Sinatra stylistic effect, and lots of scat. Ms. Dupuis’ seasoned performance lent credibility to her songs and their meanings. Pianist, bandleader, arranger, Russ Kassoff never overwhelmed Ms. Dupuis’ vocals, and his effortless solos were in keeping with the sentimental ambiance.

I Remember included a duet for piano and bass, mellow and melancholy, as warm as cognac. Color My World kicked up the rhythm a notch to clave Mambo, then scat Swing, with a tempting trumpet in the midst. Ms. Dupuis enjoyed meeting friends and colleagues at a post-concert reception at Iridium.
