In tonight’s third set at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Francesco Cafiso, the sixteen year-old, also sax sensation from Sicily, led his quartet in slow, low, echoing passages, to the steady beat of piano and drums. David Hazeltine twisted this theme inside out, with fragments of embedded bass enhancing the sound. This deep, but rapid, resonant music soon returned to the original theme, after an exciting journey along the way. “Willow Weep for Me” was next, introduced by Cafiso with the original ballad intact. Abstract, accented notes, with shifting tempo and tones were on its heels, as Cafiso generated long, breathless interludes, mixed with Hazeltine’s creative riffs. David Williams’ bass solo added a bright, elegant touch, before the quartet returned to a fused finish.
The following piece began with Joe Farnsworth’s exceptional percussive solo, as breathless as Cafiso’s sax, which switched the solo, without losing momentum. A meandering, mellow, moody swing filtered through the Club, as the set ended with two swing pieces, upbeat, eclectic, and Oh, so midnight, New York. It was actually almost 1:00 AM, when Cafiso, just sixteen, energetically and enthusiastically left the stage. For updated listings of Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, check out Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola Website.
