(See March 14, 2005 Review). I recently caught up with the Harry Allen-Joe Cohn Quartet at Zuni, where they have a weekly, Monday night jazz event. They were in top form, the night before the July 4 holiday. In fact, they even played a rousing version of America. Also heard in this final set were: Easy to Remember, Paper Doll, Doodle Oodle, Did You Call Her Today?, and Dig In. Harry’s tenor sax sent music sailing above the dinner crowd, while Joe Cohn’s rambunctious guitar resonated with clear, polished chords. Joel Forbes and Chuck Riggs were in great form on bass and drums, as well.
Tonight’s guest, Howard Alden, a renowned guitarist about town, stopped in and joined the band for a few numbers. After the final set, Howard and Joe jammed together on one guitar, quite a photo.
