Tonight Gerhard Feldmann and Lisa L. Feldmann, President and EVP at Bösendorfer New York, hosted the first Fall event in the second year of their jazz series, titled “All that Jazz”. Alma Micic, a cum laude graduate from Berklee College of Music, is from Belgrade, Serbia. Ms. Micic arranges, composes, and sings her own music, as well as music of Strayhorn, Ellington, and Jobim, among other renowned composers. Brandon McCune, from Chicago, has studied with Kenny Barron, Betty Carter, and Mulgrew Miller. He has served as a bandleader, music director, and sideman and founded BASIC, Inc., a non-profit for gospel music. Kengo Nakamura, from Japan, studied classical guitar, electric bass, and acoustic bass. He has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Cyrus Chestnut, and Benny Golson. Nakamura has composed, arranged, and recorded, and he was voted best Japanese jazz bass player by Swing Journal magazine.
Special guests from the Austrian General Consulate of New York joined longtime Bösendorfer New York fans and new audience members for a lovely evening of vocals and lyrics from the Alma Micic Trio. Ms. Micic sang ballads from her recent recording as well as new arrangements and even one song (wish there had been more) in native Serbian, that transported us to a faraway land. Ms. Micic sang with clarity and charisma, of unrequited love, goodbyes, joy, and an especially lovely spring day in her homeland. This was a magical moment, and the song-like resonance of the Bösendorfer, expertly played by Brandon McCune, added refinement and elegance to an already refined and elegant event. Kengo Nakamura, on bass, was personality-plus, and his passion for the melodies shone through. The trio, as a unit, has professional ease with each other, as they are timed to solo showcases and soft overlays or backups. The rhythms switched from swing to sultry, samba to serenade.
A wine and cheese reception followed with some piano jams and a general good time. On November 16, the Vana Gierig Trio will perform in the “All that Jazz” Salon, with Brazilian ballads and original compositions.
