For tonight’s Halloween “Jazz in the Sky” event, the Kuni Mikami Trio performed indoors at the elegant Terrace in the Sky Restaurant, with glassed walls, overlooking the New York skyline and Hudson River. The Trio was one star, and the view was the other. Kuni Mikami played for many years with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and was Lionel Hampton’s pianist, as well. The easy swing and ballads, listed above, were elegant, upbeat, and purely danceable. This is a Trio for special occasions, when the request is for songs “that we know” and “music for dancing and dreaming”. Kuni Mikami’s small piano was clear, resonant, and melodic, with Bryce Sebastien’s bass warm and earthy. Joel Fass took thematic leads often, and he plays the guitar with eloquence.
“Jazz in the Sky” will continue indoors, “Pre-Thanksgiving”, on November 21, 2006, with Duo Guitars, Howard Alden and Gene Bertoncini, in Django, Ballads, and Brazilian, through the following winter months, to re-appear outdoors on the Terrace in early Spring, 2007. Keep checking Upcoming Events, click here, for news of “Jazz in the Sky” dates and musicians. Call Terrace in the Sky at 212.666.9490 to reserve a good seat or table.
