I was joined by Marsha Patelson of Patelson Music House tonight for Woody Allen & The Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band’s renowned Monday night set at Café Carlyle. We sat at the Carlyle Bar, dining on shrimp cocktail, chilled asparagus, and wine and enjoyed seeing the prolific and award-winning filmmaker, actor, playwright, musician, Woody Allen, performing on clarinet. Each Monday night he joins Eddy Davis, on banjo, plus Eddy’s Band, composed of Debbie Kennedy on bass, Simon Whettenhall on trumpet, Jerry Zigmont on trombone, Conal Fowkes on piano, and Pat Carmichael on drums.
There were almost no breaks for this one and one-half hour set, nor any audience asides, either. This was pure New Orleans styled music, rambunctious and resonant, engaging and energized. Sometimes the Band played at once, and sometimes solos were featured, with duo and trio backup. Woody Allen threw himself into the genre and the moment, especially late in the set, when fewer musicians remained. He seemed to warm up more and more, and his seasoned, understated approach, with some soft vocals, as well, was a sight to behold. Eddy Davis is a banjo virtuoso and vocalist, as well, and the other five musicians took solos and duos with aplomb. Café Carlyle was sold-out, standing room at the Bar, and this long-running gig can be caught each Monday night at 8:45 PM, reservations required.
