On a hot summer night, I traveled to South Street Seaport for a relaxing and breezy jazz cruise, aboard the newly refurbished, historical Tall Ship, called Clipper City. We sailed from South Street Seaport at 9:30 PM and returned at 11:30 PM, and this elegant jazz club in New York Harbor was filled with New Yorkers and travelers from around the globe. Avram Fefer, tenor saxophonist, and Joe Cohn, guitarist, both renowned in the New York jazz community, lead this weekly Wednesday night event with glittering guest musicians. One of tonight's guests, James Polsky, drummer, is the founder of Jazz Standard. The five-man band included, besides Cohn, Fefer, and Polsky, Todd Grunder on bass and Ian Hendrickson-Smith on alto sax. The band treated us to the sounds of Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Benny Golson, and George Gershwin. Clipper City was rocking, as it also serenaded Lady Liberty and the Staten Island Ferry.
This Tall Ship is 158 feet long, with masts and rigging reaching to 120 feet from the water. The crew climbed about the Ship, hoisting and dropping sails, while the busy bar kept the guests refreshed. Clipper City and its sister boat, Shearwater Yacht, belong to Manhattan By Sail, and its President, Tom Berton, was on board tonight with his wife, Eva. Tom is a longtime jazz aficionado, and this Jazz Cruise was his dynamic concept.
