I recently stopped by Rail Line Diner, on Ninth Avenue at 23rd Street, in Chelsea, prior to a ballet matinee at the nearby Joyce Theater. This gorgeous diner, with sunlight wafting through the windows, beckoned passers-by to come in for a light breakfast or brunch. I had something in between, with a Cappuccino, Toasted Whole Wheat Bagel, Ruby Grapefruit, and Sliced Avocado on Lettuce. This was my perfect morning selection.
In addition to The Joyce, Rail Line Diner is very close to the Chelsea Art Galleries, the High Line Park, and the Fashion District, as well as many Off-Broadway theaters. The design of The Rail Line Diner, named for the former New York Central Railroad, is sleek and historical, with framed photographs and three-dimensional artwork, all depicting the iconic history of the Chelsea neighborhood. The Rail Line Diner has comfortable booths, spacious tables, an intimate bar, and an expansive party space in the rear section of the restaurant. And, it's open 6 AM until 1 AM Sundays through Wednesdays, and 6 AM until 2 AM Thursdays through Saturdays. Its menu is just as limitless as its hours. Proprietor, Teddy Nictas, and his son, John, are almost always on hand. You should ask them about private parties and home catering, while you are there, as I know from experience that they will make your event reasonable in pricing and enticing in presentation.
