Tonight Gerhard Feldmann and Lisa L. Feldmann, President and EVP at Bösendorfer New York, hosted the November Fall event in the second year of their jazz series, titled “All that Jazz”. Pianist, Werner “Vana” Gierig, from Munich, Germany, a regular at Blue Note and Birdland, performing on the Bösendorfers of both Clubs, and who has been reviewed often for this magazine, is one of New York's top jazz pianists and composers. His performance style and musical direction have been recognized worldwide, rewarding him with international tours and recordings, by artists, such as Regina Carter, Rachelle Ferrell, Lena Horne, George Howard, Special EFX, Najee, Warren Hill, Will Downing, Angela Bofill and many others. In 2003 Vana was hired by Sex & The City (HBO) to compose a solo piano piece, "The Dinner", for their season finale with Mikhail Baryshnikov.
Alvester Garnett, from Richmond, VA, has accompanied singers, such as Abbey Lincoln and Betty Carter, as well as instrumentalists, Vana Gierig, Wynton Marsalis, James Carter, Regina Carter, and Cyrus Chestnut. Bassist, Sean Conly, from Kansas City, is a member of Vana Gierig’s New York trio, and he has performed widely with renowned musicians. Tonight’s program included songs from a new recording to be released in the Spring of 2007 on the new Twinz/Challenge merger label, as well as “The Dinner”, the Sex & The City composition, plus “Healing in Foreign Lands”, the song that received the SESAC award for being on a #1 album in the Billboard charts. Vana personally composed all works on tonight’s program.
Program:
“G-Song”
“Low Features”
“Healing In Foreign Lands”
“A New Day”
“The Dinner”
“Manhattan Sidewalk”
The music was extremely well received, with Brazilian and international infusion. There were powerful and generous solos on piano, bass, and drums, and the Bösendorfer sounded exceptionally well in this sold-out event. Vana Gierig writes, “I loved the space and the setting of this Bösendorfer event. The intimacy of the room – combined with its exceptionally brilliant acoustics – made it a very elegant concert event, the way I actually prefer that jazz is heard.”
A wine and cheese reception followed with an edible fruit arrangement, Courtesy of Roberta and Edible Arrangements, West 38th Street, NYC, sweetened with piano jams and a general good time. On December 14, 2006 the Nuevo Tango Trio will perform in the “All that Jazz” Salon, with contemporary Argentine Tango music.
