After a matinee in Greenwich Village recently, I stopped by the very conveniently located and charming Ethiopian bistro, Meskerem, the sister restaurant of Meske in Hell’s Kitchen, featured in the above linked testimonial. Mike, Meskerem’s proprietor, and Sophia, wait staff, were extremely helpful and attentive. After you walk down a few steps from MacDougal Street, home of the hottest New York jazz clubs and ultra-hip shops, you will enter Meskerem, decorated with Ethiopian and regional African masks, paintings, carvings, candles, musical instruments, dolls, books, clocks, cloths, lanterns, and kitchenware. The spongy, delicious whole wheat, platter-shaped bread, placed under food and as a folded side, is broken into sections and eaten with the diner’s hands, after enclosing portions of the fish, meat, chicken, vegetable, or side dish inside the bread. This is a ritual and expected of all who dine at Meskerem or Meske. I was well prepared with packages of tiny hand wipes, although Meskerem will provide multiple napkins.
I dined on Timatim, a chopped tomato and onion salad, as an Appetizer, then, on the Platter, Azefa (Chopped Onions, Peppers, Lentils, Vinegar, Mustard), Doro Wat (Chicken Leg, Onions, Garlic, Ginger, Berbere, Hard Boiled Egg), Vegetable 2 (Cabbage, Carrots, Potato, Ginger, Curry), Miser Alech (Split Lentils, with Ginger, Garlic, Onions, Olive Oil, and Berbere Sauce), Mushrooms, with Onions, Tomatoes, Garlic, and Awaze, and a glass or two of Two Oceans Shiraz Wine from South Africa. My take-home bag included selections from all of the above, as this after-theater supper was way more generous than a single meal. I enjoyed these delicacies tremendously. Meskerem is open every day for lunch and dinner. They specialize in catering, as well, and could create a superb and memorable home party or small group event at either restaurant.
